Being a pioneering force in the pharmaceutical industry for nearly eight decades, we at Morison are proud of the legacy we are creating – a legacy of developing a sustainable business with the primary focus on nurturing our employees, safeguarding consumer trust, giving back to the community and striving hard towards optimal resource utilizing with minimal impact to the environment. As a company that practices Triple-Bottom-Line reporting, we try our best to align ourselves with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), thereby directing our influence to bring awareness and to be an ethical role model in the current competitive business environment.

We at Morison have constantly placed integrating sustainability as an essential to our business strategy by realizing we can do well by doing good. While we place great importance to executing our corporate strategy, a similar importance is place on addressing environmental and social sustainability. The new pharmaceutical manufacturing industry is expected to produce both industrial waste water and domestic waste water of which the quantity around 70 m3/day and 10 m3/day respectively. Having understand the importance of this, Morison has initiated a zero liquid discharge waste water treatment plant in Homagama (new plant) to treat the waste water and reuse the treated water for cooling towers, toilet flushing and gardening requirements. We continue “Reduce, Re - use, Reserve” water project in both Mutwal and Homagama, which was introduced last year, in line with the UNSD Goal Number 6 and 14 respectively ( Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all and Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development). Production wastewater used for cleaning of equipment and liquid lines is collected and directed through multiple purification channels to produce makeup water for cooling towers. This saves 800,000 liters of water during the year reported. Installation of Multi filter & Activated Carbon Filters at Mutwal helped bring down the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels below 65 mg/L, and 10 mg/L respectively. This is much lower that the required level set by the Central Environment Authority Act no. 47 of 1980.

Water Saving & Treating Plant

Reduce. Re-use. Reserve. is the governing morality that we at Morison abide by to contribute as an ethical corporate body to save the planet earth from its worsening state. As a forward-thinking approach to the environment is of paramount importance; in parallel to the Hemas 70th Anniversary Celebration, we at Morison proposed a project to preserve Water, the lifeblood gifted from Mother Nature to make surviving on Planet Earth possible.
As a functioning corporate body, we make production waste-water by cleaning of equipment, process waste from liquid lines and many other forms, which disposes chemical-infused wastewater to the environment. Through the proposed initiative, we will be directing all wastewater through our purification channel thereby removing some of the contaminants making it fit enough to be discharged back to the environment, while also to be re-used for our air-conditioning cooling tower on the production floor, making headway in reducing our freshwater footprint.
